In his opening chapter, author Frosty Wooldridge, invokes the ghosts of authors from prior centuries to present the reader with an existential dilemma...the same one that sneaks up on many of us about midlife: Am I, the reader, choosing mediocrity, quiet desperation...or something heroic? The quotes are from Henry David Thoreau and Jack London. Author Wooldridge's writing isn't done in a confrontational tone. His style is sincere, even invitational. The book intended for the ordinary, everyday kind of hero.If the reader chooses to continue, the book unfolds into a step-by-step instructional guide for leading a life of adventure. It is complete with lists for preparation, ideas for destinations, motivational vignettes, and suggestions for finding help and support along the way. It is probably the most practical self-help book in my library.This reviewer notes that the book does bog down in the details of its recommendations. The packing lists are lengthy and written from a masculine perspective. And, the author readily acknowledges his built in bias, taking his best shot at formulating parallel lists for women.
